Fishing - a good news story

Why is it important to the South West to have a healthy fishing industry ?

Despite the bureaucracy and waste created by the Common Fisheries Policy, the fishing industry in the South West remains vibrant and positive about the future.  There is always a tension between the economic use of a natural resource versus the conservation of habitat and species that exist within it

This tension creates a healthy dynamic that results in sustainable economic activity that has a self-interest in protecting and conserving the habitant and wildlife for future generations.  This is the situation that has existed in our in-shore waters for centuries.

The fishing industry generates millions of pounds for the south west, sustains local communities, provides employment, and delivers an extremely important source of healthy, nutritious food on to your plate!

In Lyme Bay conservationists believe that the interests of the local marine environment conflicts with the activities and needs of the local inshore fishing fleet.  To stop fishing in these areas would be a hollow victory.  Fishermen are part of the local coastal communities both in social and economic terms.
