The Real Issues

Click on the three questions below to find out SWIFA's viewpoint

What is SWIFA doing to ensure sustainable inshore fishing?

SWIFA believes that the Wildlife Trust’s current position on Lyme Bay would be disastrous for the local inshore fishing fleet which is an important part of a thriving, working coastal community.  SWIFA fully acknowledge the need for protection to some areas of Lyme Bay and are 100% supportive of the 2006 Agreement set out by DEFRA.

Before fishermen themselves become endangered species, SWIFA are going to work hard to prove to Conservation Groups, like DWT, and DEFRA, that they can make this Agreement stick and work for the long term sustainability of Lyme Bay.

  • The South West Inshore Fishermen’s Association was formed in 2006.  Its main role and purpose can be summarised:

  • consolidating all of our knowledge of best practice to ensure sustainable inshore fishing

  • promoting the socio-economic benefits of a sustainable fishing fleet to local coast communities

  • working with government and other parties to ensure a sustainable future for our inshore waters which is inclusive to South West Inshore Fishermen (and women!)

  • ensuring that all SWIFA members operate within SWIFA’s Constitution and Code of Conduct which you can see on the Rule & Regulations page of this website.
